Construction work requires constant motion of the body in ways that may not always be too comfortable for most individuals. It is extremely important to step back, evaluate the work load, and figure out where you could change up the way you are performing a task to become more “ergonomically correct”.
Always begin and end the day with a stretch and flex session. This is a 5-10-minute session that allows for the muscles to warm up and get loose. Make sure to stretch the entire body from the neck on down to the ankles.
Proper methods of lifting and handling protect against injury. Proper lifting makes work easier. You need to “think” about what you are going to do before bending to pick up an object. Overtime, safe lifting technique should become a habit.
Painting, taping, and hanging all require some sort of overhead work. This can be especially straining on the neck and shoulders. There is an increased risk for injury when holding material above shoulder eight, twisting arms in an awkward position, working with unstable footing, frequent flexing of the neck, or performing repetitive movements combined with force.
Moving material is always easier when you have equipment to help you out. Save your body any chance you can. Simple things we can use every day to move material include pallet/pallet jacks, rolling carts, and mini bakers for example. This removes the strain from your body substantially.
